For decades, Botox has been a household name for its powers of wrinkle reduction and cosmetic enhancement. However, few know that the history of this treatment is just as intriguing as its abilities. Its journey from a known toxin to a medical marvel took many years of research and one small coincidence. Read on to learn more about the history of Botox.
The Early Years
Botox began simply as botulinum toxin, a deadly poison first documented by German physician Justinus Kerner. Later, in 1895 it was formally discovered and isolated by Emile Pierre van Ermengem. Both men had been studying the cause of botulism and discovered the toxin through various experiments. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that an American scientist named Dr. Edward Schantz crystalized the substance for use.
The First Treatments
Scott Frank, an ophthalmologist at the University of California began experimenting with the toxin in the 1970s. He began with trying to treat crossed eyes in monkeys before applying it to human subjects. With successful results it was granted FDA approval, and it began to be used in the treatment of eyes.
Since then, it was widely distributed to ophthalmologists all over the country and abroad before receiving several more FDA approvals. Its popularity and versatility grew quickly!
The Discovery of Botox
In the mid 1980s, ophthalmologist Dr. Jean Carruthers and her husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers, made an accidental discovery. They observed that Botox injections not only relieved muscle spasms but also smoothed out wrinkles and lines around the eyes. This chance observation was the true beginning of Botox as a brand. It sparked a cosmetic revolution when Botox was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in 2002.
As you can see, the journey of Botox from a lethal toxin to a versatile treatment for face lines and wrinkles was a long one. If not for the curiosity and ingenuity of many scientists, Botox may never have come to be.
